Installing SharePoint 2010 Server (Foundation) On Windows 2008 Server R2

In my previous post I had mentioned the system requirements for installing SharePoint 2010. In this post we will go through the various steps required to install SharePoint 2010.

As you might know, we have 2 options for installing SharePoint 2010:-
1) The "Standalone" mode which is similar to "Server Farm" installs a single server using default settings. Additional servers can not be added to create a farm.
2) The "Server Farm" mode provides the option to configure the installation path and define feedback options. Additional servers can be added to farm.

Following are the steps for installing and configuring SharePoint Server 2010 Foundation in Server Farm mode.

Installing the Prerequisites
Before actually starting the SharePoint 2010 setup, we have to get the server ready by installing the desired OS and the mandatory perquisites softwares. Following is the list of prerequisites and the links for downloading them.

  • Windows server 2008 with SP 2 / Windows 7 / Vista (64bit)
  • Windows 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2008 KB971831
  • WCF Fix article for Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 7 KB976462
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Native Client
  • Microsoft "Geneva" Framework Runtime
  • Microsoft Sync Framework Runtime v1.0 (x64)
  • Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services ADOMD.NET
  • PowerShell V2 RTM
  • SQL Server 2008 SP1
  • .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package) KB959209 KB967190

  • Installing SharePoint Server 2010

    Following are the steps:-

Run the setup and the following splash screen will pop up. Click on "Install software prerequisites" link.

    The prerequisites start getting installed.

Click finish once the prerequisites installation is complete.

Now click on "Install SharePoint Server" link in the splash screen.

Enter you product key which is available for evaluation as well as purchased versions.

Read the agreement and click "Continue" button.

We shall go ahead with "Server Farm" installation. The “Stand-alone” installation installs a single server using default settings. Additional servers can not be added to create a farm. Also, it will install SQL Express on your machine and use it for your SharePoint instance.

Again there are 2 options "Complete" and "Stand alone". The "Complete" option installs all components on a Server farm. The Farm -> Stand-alone option is the same as the one above except it provides the option to configure the installation path and define feedback options. It also enables the uses of SQL Server instead of SQL Express.

    Select the "Complete" option

Once all the components are installed, click on next button to launch the configuration wizard.

Tick the option for running configuration wizard and click on the close button.

The configuration wizard launches and guides you through the rest of the process.

    Click "Yes" to reset services

    Create a new farm

Enter the Database Server, Database Name and your database access credentials.

Enter a paraphrase. This is used to add servers to the farm at a later stage. So do remember it.

Enter a port number for the Central administration site.

Click on the finish button to complete the SharePoint 2010 installation.

With this I conclude this post. In the next post we will see how to install SP 2010 on Windows 7 OS.
